      Nelson Jackson dies at age 89

      Many on the Grand Strand are mourning the death of a well-known developer, Nelson Jackson.

      Nelson and his wife, Mary Emily built Ocean Lakes Family Campground in 1970, before opening it in 1971. Officials at Ocean Lakes confirm Nelson Jackson died early Monday morning.

      Ocean Lakes is now the largest campground on the east coast and one of the largest in the US.

      The arrangements celebrating the life of Nelson Jackson are on Wednesday and Thursday and open to the public.

      In lieu of flowers, the Jackson family is making arrangements for a memorial. The details will be forthcoming.

The details of the arrangements celebrating his life will be forthcoming. We appreciate the outpouring of kindness and concern of so many that knew him. Brad Dean, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, offered the following comments: Mr. Jackson was the consummate Southern gentleman, who always had a kind word and healthy dose of optimism for anyone he met. He built a successful business empire by simply listening to his customers and treating his employees well. Mr. Jackson helped build Myrtle Beach into what we know it as today, and his contributions will continue to benefit our community for many, many years to come.

      Nelson and Mary Emily Jackson received the MBACC TMs 2007 Ashby Ward Pioneer of the Year Award. Named in honor of the late Ashby Ward, president and CEO of the chamber for nearly 30 years, the award was established to recognize individuals who have had a significant, positive impact on the Myrtle Beach area. The award was presented to the Jacksons on Nov. 29, 2007, at the President TMs Gala, Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
