NC State Senator Martin Nesbitt Jr. loses battle with cancer

North Carolina State Senator Martin Nesbitt Junior has died.

Nesbitt, 67, died Thursday after being diagnosed last week with stomach cancer.

This week, he stepped down as Senate Minority Leader.

He served in the legislature since the early 1980's.

A statement from the North Carolina Democratic Party said "North Carolina has lost a leader and champion of exemplary and distinguished public service."
