NC sheriff says citizens should arm themselves

LILLINGTON, N.C. -- The sheriff of Harnett County is telling residents to start arming themselves in light of what he describes as a recent spike of violent crime.

WTVD in Durham reports Sheriff Larry Rollins told an audience at a community meeting on Monday to protect themselves, adding that he doesn't go anywhere without a gun.

Rollins said he wants his deputies to answer a call as fast as they can when someone has a problem, but he added that "you better be able to take care of business until we get there if you have to protect your family."

Rollins wasn't immediately available for additional comment on Tuesday.

Several speakers urged residents to call deputies if they see something suspicious, and to keep an eye out for themselves and their neighbors.
