National Guard air exercise planned over Myrtle Beach Tuesday

You may see fighter jets escorting a single engine plane in the skies over Myrtle Beach today, as the South Carolina Air National Guard conducts an air defense exercise.

The fighter jets are assigned to the SCANG's 169th Fighter Wing. The single engine craft belongs to the South Carolina Civil Air Patrol.

The exercise is planned for between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

"Such exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure the rapid response capability associated with the SCANG's Aerospace Control Alert mission," according to a release from the SCANG. "The McEntire unit is a critical component of the strategic force that is poised 24/7 to respond to airborne threats over the United States."
