The third annual 'Celebrate our Heroes' event took place at NASCAR Speedpark on Saturday in an effort to raise money and provide veterans with service dogs.

More than a dozen dogs from the Canine Angels showed up to help them celebrate Veterans Day which is on Monday.

Organizers explained in the 3 years the organization has been around, they've provided thirty trained service dogs to area veterans.

"I will even tell you that we have groups of veterans who have gotten together and become great friends, have our dogs, they go on trips together, they sleep at each other's homes, it's become an incredible community and team effort and we're so thrilled to be part of it," said Canine Angel founder Richard Kaplan.

Kaplan added that the dogs they train are rescued from local animal shelters.

He said the event is also about showing people that dogs can have a much greater purpose than just being a pet.

If you want to donate or volunteer, Kaplan said he can be reached directly at 917-575-6235.
