Myrtle Beach swim team raises money to build community pool

Team Riptides, a Myrtle Beach swim team, made waves in the community Sunday in an effort to raise money to build a new swimming facility.

They held the fundraiser at the X sports complex in Myrtle Beach.

Participants at Sunday's event took part in everything from games and face painting to raffles.

Organizers said if the new pool gets built, it would serve the entire community and would be located on River Oaks road near the Highway 31 overpass.

They added that the pool would increase the number of practice opportunities for a variety of swim levels in the community.

"By having our own facility, we can do everything that we want to, not just for our program, not just for the community but we can also better serve the swimming community as well," said Riptides head Coach James Smith.

If the facility gets built, Smith explained he hopes it will be the most comprehensive swim facility on the Grand Strand.

He added that they still need to raise another $600,000 to get the project moving forward.
