Myrtle Beach Debate has "official" #hashtag

The lastest media advisory from the South Carolina GOP has Twitter listed as one of the hosts of the January 16th Republican Presidential Debate.

The other hosts include Myrtle Beach, the SCGOP, Fox NewsChannel (which is airing the debate), and The Wall Street Journal.

The advisory says the official debate Twitter hashtag is #myrdebate.

In case you're not a Tweeter, here's an explainer on hashtags, courtesy of Twitter's own Help Center.

Definition: The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.

*People use the hashtag symbol # before relevant keywords in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets to show more easily in Twitter Search

*Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets in that category

*Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet

*Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics

The hosts and sponsors of the debate are no doubt hoping that Monday night #myrdebate trends big.
