Beth Lynn Sherlock, 34, of Hartsville, is now charged in connection with the shooting death of her 5-year-old son, according to the Darlington County Sheriff's Office.

Sherlock was charged with allowing infliction of great bodily injury upon a child and two counts of unlawful neglect of a child, the news release from the sheriff's office said.

Sherlock's 5-year-old son was shot and killed at a home on Folly Road near Hartsville the morning of Sept. 15.

Rodney Thomas Pittman, Jr., 29, of Hartsville, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of the child.

Investigators with the Darlington County Sheriff's Special Victims Unit allege that Sherlock and Pittman lived together at the Folly Road home and that she knew he was a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms, "but knowingly allowed Pittman access to a firearm inside the residence leading to the death of one child and placing another child in danger," the release stated.

According to warrants, Pittman attempted to get a loaded gun from the kitchen area of the home while impaired and showed "reckless disregard for the safety of others" by doing so.

The warrants state:

As a result of his effort to retrieve the firearm, the weapon discharged within the residence causing great bodily harm (death) to a [redacted] victim who resided in the home.

Pittman admitted to firing the gun, according to the warrant.

Sherlock drove him to Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville where he died Saturday afternoon, according to Lt. Robby Kilgo with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office.

Sherlock is currently being held at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, according to the sheriff's office.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee confirmed the child's death, but isn't releasing the boy's name because of his age.
