Lynn Schaeffer, 65, and her daughter Wendy Desarbo, 39, were arrested Tuesday and charged with Ill Treatment of Animals.
Florence County Environmental Services seized 10 horses, one pony and one mule from their home on Harden Road in Pamplico Tuesday, according to Jayne Boswell with the Florence Area Humane Society.
She says the horses appeared to be malnourished, and you could see the outline of their rib cages, tail, and hip bones showing through their skin.
"Horses were bad. It's going to take a long, long time for them to recover," said Boswell.
She says the women claim to rescue the horses but don't have the resources to properly care for them.
She says the animals are now in a safe place where they are being treated.
Schaeffer and Desarbo were charged last year with animal cruelty, according to Herbie Christmas with Florence County Environmental Services.
Officials say they've received several calls about the conditions of the horses in the past year. Schaeffer and Desabro are expected to appear before a Florence County Magistrate Thursday morning on the charges.
The judge is expected to make a decision on the custody of the horses.
