Mom sentenced to 20 years for 3-year-old daughter's death

Atelia Hunt

Atelia Hunt, 27, pled guilty to Homicide By Child Abuse in the death of her 3-year-old daughter, Edna Trinity Hunt.

Hunt and her boyfriend, Michael Huckabee, are charged with Homicide By Child Abuse in Edna's death.

Huckabee is also charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree against the child.

Prosecutors won't go into specifics about the reason for the sex charge, but say they felt the evidence was strong enough against Huckabee to charge him.

Fourth Circuit Assistant Solicitor Kernard Redmond says Huckabee pulled the child's two front teeth out.

The toddler died in October of 2011 at a Bennettsville home from unusual complications of untreated wounds and multiple inflicted traumas, according to the Marlboro County Coroner's Office.

"To say that this child endured extreme hardship would be an understatement," said Assistant Solicitor Kernard Redmond.

Hunt's attorney said Huckabee was very controlling.

"We just ask for mercy upon this court," said John Long, Hunt's attorney.

The child's paternal grandparents were in court.

Hunt apologized to the court for her actions. She has to serve at least 85% of her 20-year prison sentence before she's eligible for parole.
