Men arrested after police investigate suspicious device

Doug Johnson

The Horry County Police Department's Bomb Squad responded to Highway 544 Thursday night to investigate a suspicious device.

It resulted in the arrests of Kevin Richard Johnson, 22 and Doug Johnson, 47. Kevin Johnson is charged with Possession of an Explosive Device and Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol.

Police were called to a home on Bradford Circle just before 6 p.m. when a man said he got a voicemail from Kevin Johnson, threatening to shoot him.

Police found Kevin Johnson walking along Highway 544 and searched him. They say they found a gun and marijuana on him, as well as a small metallic object that he told them was an explosive device.

Once the device was destroyed, the investigation led them back to the house on Bradford Circle, where 9 additional devices were located and Doug Johnson was taken into custody. He's charged with Possession of an Explosive Device and Possession of a Sawed off Shotgun.

For a time during the investigation, all Conway bound lanes just west of Highway 31 on Highway 544 were shutdown.
