Fire officials say just after 6 o'clock Tuesday evening, a home on Beverly Creek Road in the Lester community of Bennettsville went up flames.
Bennettsville City Fire Department responded to the call that came into the 9-1-1 dispatch center.
Officials say someone called 9-1-1 saying a woman was trapped inside.
Fire officials say they found 55-year-old Mary Helen Wade's body after they put out the fire.
Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown says it appears she died from injuries suffered in the fire.
Brown says an autopsy will be performed on Wade's body at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) (http://www.musc.edu/) in Charleston to determine the exact cause of death.
Wade's co-workers gathered at the scene Tuesday night. They say she worked at Senior Catering in Bennettsville for more than a decade and was a faithful employee. They say they'll miss their good friend.
"She was a hard worker and a good person, and I really hate that this happened, and I give my condolences to the family," said co-worker Carson Lloyd.
Fire officials have called investigators from the State Law Enforcement Division to help them determine what caused the fire.
We're told it's routine to call in SLED whenever someone dies in a fire.
