Marlboro County Council approves resolution to add SROs at two schools
Marlboro County, S.C. (WPDE) —
Marlboro County Council approved a resolution Tuesday night "approving a budget amendment to the 2017-18 budget with regards to school resources officers " at Wallace and Blenheim Elementary Middle Schools.
Council members also gave the green light to first reading on an ordinance, " approving an agreement with the Marlboro County School District for school resource officers for Blenheim and Wallace Schools."
Many parents urged school board members to add SROs at the school following a threat at Wallace Elementary Middle School last month.
A 14-year-old student was arrested on charges of disturbing schools and threatening the lives of public employees after he told a fellow student last week at Wallace Elementary Middle School that he planned to shoot up the school and had specific targets, according to Lt. Trevor Murphy with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.
That threat pushed the Marlboro County School Board to take action last week and they voted unanimously to add school resource officers at Wallace and Blenheim Elementary Middle Schools.
Marlboro County School Board Chairman Lucy Parsons said it will cost about $133,000 for the first year for two officers and two cars. That money is coming out of the board's fund balance, but the board said it’s worth it.
The county is expected to cover the cost of the SROs.
Parsons said they hope to have the officers in the schools before next month.
