Damien Ellison resigned from the Marion County Sheriff's Office July 10th, amid an investigation into an accident last month in Mullins where Ellison struck and killed a man on his moped, according to officials with the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Ellison was responding to assist a Highway Patrol officer when he hit and killed Kenneth Killingsworth, 68, on his moped on Gapway Street in Mullins.
Killingsworth died of massive head and body trauma, according to Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson
Sheriff Mark Richardson said he learned after the accident that Ellison's drivers license had been suspended since February for failure to pay a speeding ticket.
Richardson added the ticket was issued in another county.
He said his office does license checks on all their deputies once a year, and in August the check on this deputy came back clear.
Richardson placed Ellison on on unpaid administrative leave following the accident.
The dash camera inside the Ellison's patrol car wasn't working at the time of the accident, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
The Florence County Sheriff's Office is investigating the deadly wreck.
