Manny Jay gives back to Florence community he grew up in

Manny Jay gave away backpacks filled with school supplies and had barbers giving free haircuts.

School shopping was easier for dozens of Florence families Saturday.

Television star Manny Jay grew up in Florence with very little , but now he's able to help others.

Saturday he threw a free community event in the same community he grew up in.

He gave away backpacks filled with school supplies and had barbers giving free haircuts.

He says he did it to support their dreams.

"I see them in me. I see the same kids that people say wasn't gonna make it, I see the same kids people say you're a trouble maker. I see the same kids say this is it and I know that's not true because I've been there. I've been that kid and look at me look at what God has blessed me to be. So it's a blessing," Jay said.

Yolanda Cannon has one son and five grandchildren still in school and buying school supplies and backpacks isn't cheap.

Cannon says without the event, she wouldn't have been able to buy all the supplies the children needed.

"I mean just to see the community just to do something for the children. Some people can't afford it some can. I feel great. God blessed me," Cannon said.
