Man struck and killed by car

Florence police and South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating a deadly accident.

Melvin Nettles, 53, was trying to cross the street when he was hit and killed by a car Tuesday night on Pamplico Highway at Howe Springs Road in Florence, according to Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken.

Nettles lived at Gene's Residential Care Facility, the coroner said. He was walking from the store back to the care facility when he stepped out into the street, Coroner von Lutcken said.

Nettles was wearing dark clothing.

A car swerved to miss Nettles, but hit him knocking him to the ground, Florence Police Major Carlos Raines said.

A second car swerved and was able to miss him, but Raines said, a third car ran over him.

The investigation is ongoing.

No word yet on whether any charges will be filed.
