Circuit Court Judge Steven John sentenced Craig Bellmon, 28, to five years but th
suspended that sentence to two years in prison Tuesday morning for the beating death of James Gregg McClellan, 39, last November at a home on Beaufort Street in Dillon, according to the Fourth Circuit Solicitor's Office.
Bellmon pled guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter under the North Carolina verses Alford
in which the judge can accept a defendant's guilty plea, but the defendant maintains his innocence.
A police report stated that Bellmon says McClellan came to the home and grabbed him, so they started fighting.
Bellmon reached over and picked up a baseball bat and started hitting McClellan several times, according to the report.
It says he then called 911 to report what happened.
McClellan died at the hospital.
Bellmon got credit for the 11 months he's already served at the Dillon County Detention Center. He will be placed on probation for five years following his release from prison.
