Michael Huckabee is standing trial this week in the death of Edna Trinity Hunt, 3.
Hunt died on October 6, 2011.
Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown said autopsy results revealed Hunt died from unusual complications of a urinary tract infection, which was left untreated, and multiple inflicted traumas.
Huckabee is charged with Homicide By Child Abuse and Criminal Sexual Conduct in the child's death.
The girl's mother, Atelia Hunt, pleaded guilty to Homicide By Child Abuse and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Hunt lived with Huckabee at the time of her daughter's death.
During opening statements, Fourth Circuit Assistant Solicitor Mary T. Johnson-Lee says Hunt and Huckabee met online and eventually moved in together.
Lee says the child started being abused a short time after.
Edna Trinity Hunt had cigarette burns to her private areas and bruises on her body, Lee said.
She added the girl's head had been shaved and her teeth yanked out of her mouth.
The little girl had also been raped, according to Lee.
The first witness to testify was a registered nurse at Marlboro Park Hospital in Bennettsville.
Linda Hooper says she was working in the emergency department when the child's mother brought her in asking for help.
"She said something to the effect, 'Help me. My baby's not breathing,'" said Hooper.
Hooper cried as she explained the child's injuries to jurors.
"I've never seen anything like it and I hope I never do again ," Hooper explained.
Lee told jurors it wasn't the multiple injuries that killed the little girl, but a urinary tract infection that went untreated.
The infection spread to the child's kidneys and then her brain, Lee said.
Huckabee's attorney Brandon Steen says there was evil in the house the night Hunt died, but Huckabee isn't responsible for what happened to the child.
Steen told the jury Huckabee is a mama's boy and not an evil mastermind as depicted by prosecutors.
The trial is expected to last through the week.
Judge Michael Baxley is presiding over the trial.
