The commander of a U.S. Navy ship that sank a pirate boat Thursday has a Grand Strand connection.
Somali pirates opened fire on the U.S.S. Nicholas off East Africa. The Navy frigate returned fire and took five pirates into custody.
The skipper of the Nicholas is Commander Mark Kesselring, whose parents live in Horry County.
Maggie Kesselring told NewsChannel 15 her son is surprised by the media attention, for what he said was just doing his job.
