Man killed after birthday party fight

A 26-year-old man was killed after an altercation at a birthday party escalated into a shooting. Sumter Police arrested Denver Williams, 26, for shooting and killing Chauncey Mack on Saturday.

Police say Mack and Williams were attending a birthday party at the James Village Apartment Complex in Sumter when the two got into a verbal dispute. The dispute spilled into the parking lot where it escalated into a physical altercation, at which time Williams presented a handgun and fired several gunshots at Mack, police say. Mack was hit several times to the chest area, according to police.

Williams then fled the scene in a tan colored 1997 Chevy Tahoe, said police. Mack was taken to Tuomey Regional Medical Center where he later died as a result of the gunshot wounds.

The investigation has determined that this was an isolated incident and that the victim and suspect were acquainted with each other. Williams turned himself into Police Sunday afternoon. Police charged Williams with murder. He is being held at the Sumter Lee Regional Detention Center. Police say Williams may face additional charges relating to the incident.
