Man in prison for Horry County murder killed during fight at Lieber Correctional
Conway, S.C. (WPDE) —
A man who was sentenced to life in prison for a murder in Horry County was killed during a fight at Lieber Correctional Institute in Dorchester County.
Ronald Franks, 62, died at Trident Medical Center on Monday, Nov. 20, following a fight that happened the day before, according to the Dorchester County Coroner's Office.
Franks was sentenced to life in prison in July 1980 for murder. He was also sentenced to 10 years in prison for vehicle theft, according to South Carolina Department of Corrections records.
Both of those charges were out of Horry County.
Franks also attempted to escape in 1982 and 1987 and was able to escape custody in 1988, the DOC records state.
He was projected to be eligible for parole in September 2019.
