Man holding hostages at NC drug store

BELMONT, N.C. - Police in North Carolina say an attempted armed robbery has turned into a hostage situation at a drug store.

Police in Belmont were called to the CVS store shortly before 2 a.m. Friday. Police Chief Charles Franklin said there also was a report of shots fired and a hostage situation.

It was not immediately clear how many people had been taken hostage or how many people were involved in the attempted robbery.

Streets in the area have been blocked off. Officers from several departments are at the scene, including the Gastonia SWAT team.

Belmont Sgt. John Wilson says no injuries have been reported.

Belmont is about 15 miles west of Charlotte.
