Man charged after pointing gun at deputy

Delbert Garland Jr faces several gun charges.

Deputies with the Florence County Sheriff's Office arrested Delbert Garland, Jr. Wednesday after they say he shot a firearm while standing on McFadden Street in Lake City.

Captain Michael M. Nunn says while responding to a call of a man with a gun in the area, deputies and other citizens witnessed Garland fire a handgun in the air, and then point the gun directly at an FCSO deputy before placing the gun on the ground and laying down. Nunn says Garland was taken into custody and a 9mm High Point handgun with an obliterated serial number was recovered.

Garland had previously been convicted of a violent crime and was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition. Nunn says the investigation into this incident is ongoing and additional charges are possible.

Garland is charged with Discharging a Firearm in a Public Conveyance, Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol, Pointing and Presenting a Firearm at a Person, Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number and Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Convicted of a Violent Felony.

Garland is being held at the Florence County Detention Center on a $125,000.00 surety bond.
