Man charged with trying to run over woman walking near Highway 501
Conway, S.C. (WPDE) —
A 40-year-old Conway man has been charged after police say he hit a woman with his vehicle on purpose.
Jason Dewey Gaines, 40, has been charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature after a crash that happened near Wild Wing Resort, off of Highway 501, on Wednesday, according to Horry County police and detention center records.
Horry County police were called to that area for an attempted murder and saw Gaines in a Conway police car. Gains then told the Horry County officer that he had a verbal fight with a 43-year-old woman at their home when she left and started walking down Wild Wing Boulevard toward the storage unit on Highway 501.
Gaines "made several conflicting statements as to how the collision occurred between the victim and his vehicle," according to the police report, and told the officer the woman jumped in front of, or on top of the vehicle.
He told the officer he tried to drive around her and not hit her. He also told the officer that before the crash she told him she was going to "take everything that he had," according to the report.
The woman told police when they came to the hospital that Gaines had "been on a rampage due to narcotic usage for several days" and that he sped the car toward her while she was walking in the grassy area off of Highway 501 North and she tried to get out of the way, but couldn't.
She told police she remembered "being up in the air" after she was hit but didn't remember much after that.
Gaines was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center at around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday and is still there as of around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
