Man arrested for drugs, weapons after trying to get Conway shooting victim to hospital

A 28-year-old Georgetown man is in the Horry County detention center after being arrested on Friday after trying to get a shooting victim to a hospital.

Brian Justin Canty, 28, was charged with simple possession of marijuana; possession of a weapon by certain persons; possession of schedule II narcotics, 2nd offense; possession with intent to distribute heroin, 3rd offense; and possession with intent to distribute heroin in close proximity to a school, according to a Conway police report.

His arrest comes after a shooting in Conway at the corner of Leonard Avenue and Live Oak Street.

When police got to that scene, they determined that three shots had been fired and that there may be one victim, according to a Conway police report. But there were no suspects or victims there.

But, a short time later, the victim was found near Brooks Stadium at Coastal Carolina University, prompting a brief "shelter-in-place" alert for students while officials worked to determine what had happened.

Canty was trying to get the victim, listed in the report as a 24-year-old Pawleys Island man, to the hospital, according to the police report.

The suspect in the shooting is listed as a man, between 30 and 35-years-old, according to the report. No further information has been issued by police.
