Man accused of trying to rape woman outside grocery store

Florence police say Prince Gurley, 20, tried to rape a woman at knife point Tuesday afternoon behind the Food Lion on South Cashua Drive in Florence.

Gurley approached the 54-year-old woman as she was getting back inside her car, according to Major Carlos Raines.

Gurley grabbed the woman's car door to keep it open and she hit him with a cane several times, but Raines says Gurley was able to pull the woman out of the car.

He forced her near some dumpsters where he attempted to rape her, according to Raines.

People inside the grocery store heard her screaming and ran in her direction.

Raines says when two men approached Gurley, he pulled the knife on them and then ran into the woods.

A search ensued and he was later arrested by deputies with the Florence County Sheriff's Office.

Gurley is charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct First Offense, Assault And Battery of A High And Aggravated Nature And Possession Of A Weapon During The Commission Of A Violent Crime.

He's being held at the Florence County Detention Center.
