LUMBERTON, N.C. - Some Lumberton residents are trying to attract more visitors to the downtown area.

The Fayetteville Observer reported a group called Rediscover Downtown Lumberton is working on development projects.

The first effort placed large planters in the downtown plaza. The group wants to improve a fountain in the plaza which often is not working.

Group leaders Robert Britt and Susan Walker says the plaza is often used for community events such as the Christmas tree lighting and family movie nights.

Business owners are worried because there are few stores to attract shoppers. Most businesses downtown are law offices focused on the courthouse.

Much of Lumberton's growth in recent years has been along Interstate 95.

The group is working with city officials and the Lumberton Visitors Bureau.
