Longs homeless shelter getting 5,000 square foot addition

Ground will be broken Wednesday at 3 p.m. on a 5,000 square-foot, 37-bed addition to a homeless shelter on Highway 9 in Longs.

According to a news release, the North Strand Housing Shelter's addition will mean the shelter can house up to 57 people.

The addition will include a large meeting room, dining facility, storage, bedrooms and bathrooms, according to the release.

The construction is being funded by three Community Development Block Awards over three years. Those funds are being administered through Horry County's Community Development and Grants Administration Department and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Worldview Ministries also secured a grant to help fund the addition through the State Housing Trust Funds and bank loans, the release said.
