Local Red Cross Volunteers & Staff Continue Deploying to Texas to Assist with Harvey
N Charleston, S.C. (WPDE) —
As Tropical Storm Harvey continues catastrophic damage, the American Red Cross has mounted a massive relief effort ahead of the most deadly and devastating hurricane forecast to strike the United States in over a decade.
The Red Cross has mobilized thousands of trained Red Cross disaster relief workers, truckloads of kitchen supplies as well as tens of thousands of ready-to-eat meals to support this response effort. Trailers full of shelter supplies including cots and blankets—enough to support thousands of people—are in Texas.
“The Palmetto South Carolina Region has deployed 48 volunteers to areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. We’re thankful for the dedication of volunteers and staff who are willing to help those in need,” said Louise Welch Williams, Regional CEO. “The best way to help those affected by this storm is a financial gift to the Red Cross or become a trained Red Cross volunteer.”
More than 125 Red Cross emergency response vehicles are activated and 3 of those are from South Carolina. The Red Cross is also working in close collaboration with government officials and community partners in both Texas and Louisiana to coordinate potential response efforts.
If you would like to become a trained SC Red Cross volunteer, please leave a message at 843-410-8467.
