Cpl. Bob Beres, with the S.C. Highway Patrol, says Preston A. Bessent, 21, was arrested Tuesday afternoon after leading police on a short chase.

Beres says a trooper tried to stop Bessent for not wearing a seatbelt along Highway 90 near Sea Mountain Highway just before 1:30 p.m., but Bessent took off.

The chase began and lasted around 10 minutes before Bessent stopped on H ighway 111 and jumped out of the car.

Bessent was arrested a short time later. Cpl. Beres says they had to use a stun gun on Bessent before he was taken into custody.

Bessent has been charged with no seat belt, failure to stop for blue lights, driving under suspension, simple possession of marijuana, assault on a police officer, and felony possession of a firearm.
