Lightning strike causes SkyWheel shutdown

The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel was hit by lightning Thursday and is currently closed, according to the general manager of the SkyWheel.

The SkyWheel experienced a lighting strike Thursday morning that caused it to lose communication with the gondolas, said General Manger Trish Snyder. The wheel itself was not harmed in any way other than the computer systems being down.

Snyder said they are in communication with the manufacturer of the wheel to fix the problem and will continue to work throughout the weekend to get the popular attraction back up and running

How many customers have they turned away? "Too many," Snyder said. "With it being July and the busy time, we have turned away a number of people. It's our prime time, so we are really taking a hit."

Snyder said this has never happened before to the extent where the wheel was taken out of service.

We will continue to post updates to this story as new information becomes available.
