Lawsuit settled in death of 3-year-old Ty'lashia Grant

Ty'lashia Grant

Court records show the estate of Ty'lashia Grant received $325,000 in a settlement following a lawsuit filed by the Estate against Florence School District One (FSD1), SC Department of Social Services (DSS), and the Florence Police Department.

The suit was filed last September and settled two weeks ago.

Grant died on January 25, 2011 of complications from burns on her body and the toxic effect of medications in her system, which caused complications of the third degree burns. An autopsy showed the girl had codeine and morphine in her system.

The child suffered for more than a week until she was taken to the hospital. She had already died by the time she arrived.

The child's aunt and cousin are serving more than 20 years in prison after being convicted of Homicide by Child Abuse.

The lawsuit said the school district, DSS and Florence police failed to follow up with, investigate ,nor monitor child's condition.

It says the defendants knew the three-year-old was vulnerable to future abuse and death.

Court records show DSS agreed to pay $205,000, FSD1 $75,000 and Florence police $45,000.
