Florence County has filed a lawsuit asking the SC Supreme Court to issue a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the creation of the West Florence Fire District.
The suit has been filed against the Florence County Voter and Registration Office, Florence County Auditor's Office and the Florence County Treasurer's Office.
It asks the court to enjoin each of the offices from carrying out the duties needed to execute to implement West Florence Fire District.
Florence County Council voted the morning of June 12 to take legal action against the creation of a special fire district for the West Florence community.
State House Bill H.5225 sponsored by Florence and Darlington Counties Representative Phillip Lowe was passed into law last month and created a separate fire district in West Florence and removed the community from Florence County's new consolidated fire district which merged six districts into one.
West Florence residents were upset that the new district meant higher taxes for them.
Florence County Voter and Registration Office, Florence County Auditor's Office and the Florence County Treasurer's Office have 20 days to respond to the lawsuit.
There is no word yet on when this matter will head to court but we will continue to follow this story.
