Latta Town Council to discuss status of police chief

Latta Town Council will discuss Mayor Earl Bullard's controversial firing of Police Chief Crystal Moore at a meeting Thursday night.

A group of people picketed outside the Latta Town Hall Wednesday morning after Moore was fired Tuesday.

The group held signs and marched in front of the town hall calling Latta Town Mayor Earl Bullard a bully.

Mayor Bullard said he can't say why he fired Moore because it's a personnel matter.

Latta Councilman Jared Taylor said Bullard fired Moore because she refused to sign a letter of reprimand. He said Moore wanted to talk with her attorney before she signed the paperwork.

We're told some of the issues in the letter of reprimand included Moore's conversations with the news media and her lack of maintaining order among residents at town council meetings.

Taylor added the mayor can fire the police chief, but it has to be approved by council, according to their town ordinance.

He said council is not considering Moore to be fired.

Bullard said he's named Derrick Cartwright as the Interim Latta Police Chief.

Thursday night's council meeting will be held at 5:30 at Latta Town Hall, at 107 NW Railroad Ave.
