A home on Highway 544 in Horry County burned Thursday night, and because a water supply for firefighters was so far away, Highway 544 had to be shut down for a couple of hours.
When firefighters arrived at the home about 9:30 p.m., flames were already shooting through the roof.
According to an Horry County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief on scene, one person was in the home at the time of the fire and was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. He says earlier in the evening, a chair and curtains in the home caught fire, and the homeowner put it out with water. After the homeowner went to bed, firefighters believe that fire restarted.
The home is a total loss.
Highway 544 had to be shut down because the closest water supply was 1,500 feet away. Traffic was diverted through a neighborhood.
