The Horry County Police Department is taking a new approach to working with the community to help solve crimes.

The department recently started a partnership with Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry.

"It's an initiative we want to take to get out to the public that they can provide us tips for crimes and help us solve some of the crimes we have in our county," said Lt. Chuck Powell with Horry County police.

People can anonymously provide tips about crimes through Crime Stoppers. Then those tips are given to the police department.

"Not only are they able to provide us tips that people call in, but we can also use their information to get information out to the public," Lt. Powell said.

In the past Horry County Police Department utilized Crime Stoppers but over the years it ended. Now, the department has formed a partnership to bring it back.

"Instead of remaking the wheel so to speak, we decided to partner with Low Country Crime Stoppers because they've been providing us with tips," Lt. Powell said.

This new partnership goes hand in hand with the departments new social media approach, the Horry County Police Department PIO said.

"We want their help, we need their help, and it's actually helping solve crimes and provide tips that will put people in jail for breaking the law," Krystal Dotson said.
