Horry County police identify sexual assault suspect

Horry County police have arrested and charged Bernardo Joseph Evans, 30, of Myrtle Beach for a sexual assault at a convenience store on March 16.

Evans is charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct 1st Degree, Armed Robbery, and Kidnapping.

Police say Evans went into the Scotchman on Lake Arrowhead Road about 4:30 a.m. on March 16. They say he got a beverage and used the restroom.

He asked the clerk to enter the restroom to check out a problem with the plumbing and then pulled out a stun gun and forced the clerk to perform sexual acts on him, according to Horry County police.

The man then took money from the register and left, they say.

Shortly after the surveillance pictures were released Wednesday, Horry County police received several tips and by mid-afternoon, Evans was identified.

Evans contacted police and turned himself into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center where he was formally charged.

Evans is still at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
