Richard Irving, 57, from the Red Bluff community near Loris was killed Tuesday night in a motorcycle crash on Highway 9 in Horry County, according to Horry County Coroner Robert Edge. It happened near Bellamy Farms just after 6pm.
South Carolina Highway Patrol says Irving was driving a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle, and when he slowed to turn, an SUV hit him from behind.
Irving was thrown from the motorcycle. He was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the SUV is charged with driving too fast for conditions.
According to an off-duty flight paramedic, who didn't want to be identified, and who happened to come upon the scene, five strangers who saw the wreck performed CPR on Irving trying to save his life. He says an EMT from Raleigh, a medical student, a local first responder, another bystander, and he "worked as a team to give him every chance to live. They didn't know him. They had places to be. But bottom line, they had compassion. They cared about another human being."
