Horry County Councilman Carl Schwartzkopf announced Monday that he would not be running for re-election at the end of his current term.
The letter he released is below.
"Several decades ago an esteemed member of the House of Representatives stated that elected officials and public servants have a shelf life. After a period of time the effectiveness of the elected official and the benefits and services the constituents receive are gradually reduced and somewhat diminished. I feel that I have reached that time and point in my life. Therefore, in an attempt to insure that the vitality of Horry County Council and District 8 remain at a high level of effectiveness, I am taking this opportunity to announce that I am not going to file for re-election. Any resident of District 8 is welcome and encouraged to file and run for the seat I have held for the last 11 years.
I am grateful and appreciative of the citizens of District 8 and throughout the county for electing me three times. Furthermore, I am thankful for their willingness to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns with me the last 11 years. I will remain in office until December 31, 2014, and look forward to continuing to serve the citizens until that time."
