A ground breaking ceremony was held Monday afternoon in Florence county for the Highway 378 project.
Transportation officials plan to widen about 18-miles of the highway.
The expansion is a part of the original project list approved under the first Florence county Penny Sales tax referendum back in 2006.
State Senator Hugh Leatherman thinks this will be a good start to creating jobs for people.
"You will see a lot more traffic on here going to the beach and you know with the free enterprise system if people see an opportunity they are going to open that store." Sen. Leatherman said.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of November in 2016 and will cost more than $40 million dollars.
