High school Mock Trial Team stranded by Sandy in NYC

The students on North Myrtle Beach High School's Mock Trial Team placed 6th in the New York International Empire VI Mock Trial Competition, but they're stuck in New York City after Superstorm Sandy disrupted their flight plans home.

The event took place in Brooklyn and featured 36 teams from five countries.

Team member Stephanie Pacheco was named Most Effective Attorney for the three-day international competition held October 25-28, according to Horry County Schools Spokesperson Teal Britton.

The North Myrtle Beach High School Mock Trial Team members are: Stephanie Pacheco, Allie Minarik, Kennedy Hayes, Bailey Phillips, Shannon Cherney, Lukas Gschwandtner, Courtni Hyatt, Kacey Markarian, Brandon Lynch and Crystal Wade. The team is coached by B.J. Decerbo and Amy Murphy.

Still unable to fly, Britton said, the team and their chaperones are renting vans to make the trip home.

They are expected to arrive back to North Myrtle Beach sometime on Thursday.
