Hartsville man dies of hypothermia during storm

An autopsy has revealed that a man found lying near a baseball field off Leesburg Street in Hartsville, not far from his apartment, died of hypothermia, said Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee.

John Griffith, 72, was found Wednesday night around 5:15 p.m.

He was unresponsive when EMS workers arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It is believed that Griffith walked out of his house and later died from the cold weather," said Hardee. "An investigation is underway by the Darlington County Sheriff's Office. If anyone has information about this case, please call the Darlington County Sheriff's Office at 843-398-4501.

Also in our area, a Marion woman died in a house fire related to the cold on Thursday.
