Gun discharges, killing 3-year-old

The Sumter County Coroner says he's ruled the death of 3-year-old Qui'ontrez Moss accidental.

Police say the child found a gun in an apartment and the gun discharged, killing him, about 10 a.m. Tuesday at Magnolia Manor Apartments on South Pike Road.

The coroner
says autopsy results confirm the child died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Sumter police are still investigating if the owner of the gun should be charged.

The gun belonged to the child's uncle, James Patrick, according to Sumter Police Major Alvin Holston.

He says Patrick immediately called 911 after he heard the gunshot.

Patrick is a certified law enforcement officer with Shaw Airforce Base in Sumter, according to Master Sergeant Cohen Young with Shaw Airforce Base Public Affairs Office.

Holston says the weapon involved in the deadly shooting was not Patrick's service weapon.

Police will present

their findings to the Sumter County Solicitor who will decide what, if any, charges will be filed.
