Ground was broken on the new Southside Middle School Wednesday.

The school is the second project on schedule in Phase Two of Florence School District One’s School Building Facilities Plan.

The district says this is the 6th school that will be built in the district in 10 years.

The current building is over 50 years old and was built as a high school.

Principal Craig Washington says he’s excited for all the opportunities the new building will provide for the students.

"Places that appropriate for science labs, spaces that are appropriate for collaborative learning. It’s gonna mean opportunity for our kids and it’s gonna mean they’re gonna get the skills that are required for them to be competitive in the job market," Washington said.

The new school is expected to be completed by March of 2020.
