Greenville sheriff clears deputy in shooting

Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis says one of his deputies did nothing wrong when he shot and killed a suspect in early June.

Loftis says an investigation shows that Master Deputy Stan Whitten did nothing wrong when he shot and killed 22-year-old Jordan Browder of Piedmont early on June 2.

The officer had been on administrative duty since the shooting. He's a seven-year veteran with the department.

Deputies say Browder was reaching into his waistband when he was shot at a gas station. A sheriff's spokesman said it turned out that Browder did not have a gun but had refused to cooperate as he approached a deputy.

A State Law Enforcement Division investigation is continuing. Prosecutor Walt Wilkins will decide if charges will be filed.
