Governor suspends Williamsburg County Sheriff after he is indicted on federal charges

Governor Nikki Haley issued an executive order suspending Williamsburg County Sheriff Michael Johnson after a federal grand jury indicted him Wednesday on charges of Conspiracy To Commit Wire Fraud, according to the Governor's Office.

Johnson will remain under suspension pending the outcome of his case.

An interim sheriff will be appointed for Williamsburg County.

Johnson tells us he will not resign and looks forward to his day in court


A copy of the indictment says Johnson conspired with Columbia-based FIG Investments, LLC owner Lester Woods to help 130 customers falsely improve their credit ratings.

It says Sheriff Johnson filed false incident reports with a credit bureau to help customers with overdue bills claim they were the victims of identity theft.

Woods was also indicted on the same charge Wednesday.

The two are expected to appear in federal court in Columbia to be arraigned on the charges in the next week
