Gas leak shuts down Highway 17

Traffic caused by the closing of Highway 17 in North Myrtle Beach due to a gas leak.

The gas leak that shut down U.S. Highway 17 Monday afternoon has been contained, according to Pat Dowling with the City of North Myrtle Beach.

Dowling said that Highway 17 in North Myrtle Beach is now open in both directions, though only one northbound lane is open in the area of 1500 North Highway 17 where the gas leak happened.

Dowling said that area may be closed into the evening hours.

Earlier Dowling said that contractors struck a gas line while installing a utility pole at 1500 North Highway 17.

Southbound Highway 17 from North Myrtle Pointe Boulevard to 11th Avenue North and northbound Old Highway 17 were closed for about 2 hours.

SCG&E workers were on the scene quickly to fix the problem.
