Funeral arrangements set for child who died after being left in hot car

Thirteen-month-old Sophia Jane Goyeneche will be laid to rest on Tuesday at 11 am at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Hartsville.

Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery.

The child's father, David Richard Gray, 30, is charged with Unlawful Neglect of a Child.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee said last Friday, the cause of death is hyperthermia due to the extreme heat. Hardee has ruled the death an accident.

Gray is out of jail on a $10,000 bond.

Gray's co-workers said when Gray got off work at Carolina Printing last Thursday evening 5:30, he walked out to his car, and then they heard him screaming.

When his co-workers went to investigate, they said they found Gray giving his little girl mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. They added said was pleading with her to live and asking God to take his life instead of hers.

Police say Gray told them he forgot his child was inside the car.

Co-workers and friends describe Gray as a wonderful and devoted father, who made a terrible mistake.
