Residents of five South Carolina counties could get free training to help them get a job in highway construction.

The program is open to 30 residents and gives pre-employment training, heavy equipment operator training and commercial drivers' license training in the field of highway construction, according to a release from The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT).

It will also give opportunities for individuals to obtain a commercial driver's license, certification as a heavy equipment operator and National Center for Construction Education and Research certification.

Those who apply have to live in Allendale, Bamberg, Marlboro, Marion and Orangeburg counties.

The training is made possible by a grant targeting giving training to "unemployed, underemployed, minorities, women and disadvantaged individuals for transportation related jobs in the highway construction industry," the release said.
