Four Georgia firefighters taken hostage

SUWANEE, Ga. (AP) - Authorities in northeast Georgia say a gunman has barricaded himself in a home and is holding four firefighters hostage.

Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter says five firefighters on Wednesday responded to a medical call in Suwanee. They were taken hostage by a suspect he didn't identify but says the gunman released one to move the fire truck.

Ritter says information on a possible motive was not immediately available and a SWAT team and negotiator are in contact with the man.

Fire department Capt. Tommy Rutledge says there is no indication any of the firefighter has been hurt. He says the medical call seemed routine and firefighters did not believe there was any danger.

Television helicopter footage shows police and fire trucks surrounding the neighborhood of mostly two-story homes and well-kept lawns about 35 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
